Indore is a historical city, it had a trading importance during Maratha rule.Indore was granted as a province to Malhar Rao Holkar,the founder of Holkar Dynasty. Ahilyabai Holkar the daughter in law of Malhar Rao Holkar is also one of the renowned and worshipped Historical Figure in this area.
The Rajwada or the Royal Palace is one of the famous landmark in the City. It is situated in the heart of the city near Sarafa bazaar or Jeweller's market.
The palace constructed almost 200 years ago and is mostly in wood and is classic example of maratha architecture. A royal statue of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar greets us at the entrance.
The palace is now converted in a museum and maintained by Indian government. The dilapidated structure, peeled off paint and few broken glasses could have been restored. The palace needs major restoration,however in the current status it provides us the glimpse of its historic grandeur.
The wide aisles, and arcades ,with chandeliers at top and carved out doors and windows are the heart of this palace.
We leave the Rajwada after experiencing a royal walk through the palace.The exterior of the palace is a busy street with lots of shops, stalls and hawkers around. We visit this place again at night around 10 pm to see the surprising Transformation. The place called the Sarafa turns into a busy food street at night and it stays the same till early morning.
Those who are food lovers come Indore for this moment,with lots to serve on the platter. To visit Sarafa you need a good appetite . Visit the Joshi Dahi Bada House for some lip smacking dahi wada and to experience the unique style of serving.Visit Sarafa Chowpatty for some chat and many other items from Khichadis, Halwas,Kachoris, Pakodas,Samosas, Dal Bafla,Shikanji,Jalebis,Rabdi, Gulabjamun, Malpuas and many many more.
Those who miss Sarafa at night can visit Chappan Dukan at evening to relish the taste buds. Try the Shikanji, kachoris,namkeens and Gajaks during the winters. Indore is thus a place for food lovers and history buffs.
